Framework for involving patients in patient safety

Closes 31 Dec 2020

Opened 10 Mar 2020

Overview

Due to additional pressures on the NHS at the current time, the closing date for the consultation on the draft ‘Framework for involving patients in patient safety’ will be extended to later in the year to allow for people to contribute to the consultation. We will publish revised time frames on this page when we are able.

A key part of the NHS Patient Safety Strategy published in July 2019, is the introduction of a framework for Patient Safety Partners to provide guidance on how the NHS can involve patients and their carers in their own safety, as well as being partners alongside staff in improving patient safety in NHS organisations.

Working with patients, carers, lay people, NHS frontline staff and commissioners, we have developed a draft ‘Framework for involving patients in patient safety’, which we are now consulting on ahead of publishing a final version expected spring/summer 2020.

The framework is in two sections. The first describes how organisations should support patients, their families and carers to be directly involved in their own or their loved one’s safety; and the second how organisations should support patients, carers, family members or other lay people to be involved in wider governance of safety activities.
