Introduction

Overview

The GIRFT programme has seen significant success in the surgical specialities and now more recently in the medical projects. The success of GIRFT has been based on using data to drive improvement. It is crucial to understand the system in which we are working to be able to improve the delivery of care or performance. To achieve this it is necessary to collect the relevant data. We know that the questionnaire asks for a lot of information but we believe it will be very informative.

A Trust Data Pack will be produced which will be discussed with both your Trust’s senior management team and Cardiology personnel at a Deep Dive meeting in 2019. The responses to this questionnaire will be discussed at your deep dive meeting alongside your data pack.

Why We Are Consulting

A survey of services is required to supplement the Trust level data pack drawn from centraland national sources.

The survey aims to gather site level data, therefore if you have more than one site, then please complete a survey for each site.

GIRFT Project Overview

Why are we collecting the data?

The results from the questionnaire will be used to support NHS Improvement’s duty under the Health and Social Care Act 2012 to protect and promote the interests of people who use health care services by promoting provision of health care services which are, inter alia, economic, efficient and effective.

GIRFT is a national programme overseen by NHS Improvement that aims to be deliver quality improvement in patient outcomes through peer to peer discussion with Clinicians and managers in trust and wider local partners.  It combines wide-ranging data analysis with the input and professional knowledge of Clinicians to examine how things are currently being done and how they could be improved.

Results from the questionnaire will be used for only two purposes: (1) to support GIRFT deep dive or GIRFT implementation meetings in hospitals; (2) to support recommendations in the GIRFT national specialty report. In this latter publication, no values for identifiable Trusts will be displayed.

The type and level of data being collected?

The questionnaire will not collect patient identifiable information.  The questions cover both quantifiable and qualitative themes with some response being a paragraph or two explaining how a particular trust interacts with neighboring organizations (for example).  

The questionnaire may request the name and contact details of the person who submitted responses to allow GIRFT to follow-up for clarification of answers.

Who will access the data and how will it be further shared?

The results from the questionnaire will be stored within the secure IT environment managed by NHS Improvement, and will never leave this environment. Data will be accessed only by a small number of GIRFT staff that have NHS Improvement permission to use the secure NHS Improvement IT environment Data will be regularly backed up and will be stored until no longer required for the purpose of the implementation of GIRFT programme.  NHS Improvement may also share the data internally within NHS Improvement to support our wider efficiency and productivity programmes and delivery of all statutory responsibilities of Monitor and TDA.  

Data from the audit will be shared back with participating trusts at aggregate level within the GIRFT trust-level data packs.

Data Quality and Validation

Before you submit your Trust’s questionnaire, it is worth noting that NHSI will not validate any answers. Please ensure that you check the quality of your data (in terms of both accuracy and completeness) before submission.
