AHP Clinical Placements

Closed 8 Nov 2019

Opened 7 Oct 2019

We are currently working with Health Education England and Council of Deans of Health to increase the AHP workforce through increasing pre-registration clinical placement capacity. The aim of this survey is to understand the current status of clinical placement capacity in your Trust and identify the potential for expansion to meet the national demands for AHP workforce supply.

Delivering sustainable growth in the AHP workforce is vital to delivering the ambitions of the Long term Plan. The majority of new AHPs qualify through pre registration education, ensuring growth in this route is therefore central to achieving our aims. However, to achieve this requires work with the higher education sector, local healthcare providers and national bodies to bring about this increase, raising the number of AHPs in education and training across the system. HEIs have highlighted clinical placement capacity as a barrier to increasing current intake levels and we need to understand better what is behind this trend, but initial discussions with the Council of Deans of Health suggest expansion could be achieved with better co ordination and alignment between HEIs and NHS providers, supported by a continued focus on increasing applications to AHP courses.

Our ambition must be to provide enough capacity for all suitable applicants to pre registration AHP programmes to have the opportunity to secure a place. In parts of the country some university intakes have been reduced significantly over a number of years. We can make an immediate impact on the number of places available for pre registration courses in September 2020 by working with higher education institutes (HEIs) across England to support them in expanding their intakes and by identifying the corresponding clinical placements.

To enable this to happen we are asking you to take part in a National Survey to understand our baseline position with regards to placement capacity across England. The survey will be open until 31st October and we would very much appreciate your support in completing this, one return per trust, which will help in shaping the National Programmes of work to ensure we have a sustainable workforce for the future.

We very much appreciate your time in completing this short survey, which should take no longer than 10minutes to complete.
